To begin, I am not a fan of Wakka x Lulu. Not for petty reasons, mind you — I happen to like both characters. Particularly, Wakka is so lovable, and such a unique addition to the FF series. The pairing just rubs me the wrong way because it's completely illogical. It goes against what was shown in FFX.
In FFX, some fans consider two scenes to be proof of a romance between Lulu and Wakka: the locker room scene in Luca where Lulu catches a fainting Wakka, and the scene on the Farplane where Tidus suggests Wakka as a romantic choice for Lulu.
But one must consider the details before calling those scenes proof for anything. For the locker room scene, it's understandable to a degree that people would see this as a hint for Lulu x Wakka — it definitely shows a bonding of some kind. And in a subsequent scene, Lulu is shown holding Wakka upright. But after the blitzball tournament is over, nothing romantic ever occurs between Wakka and Lulu. They never discuss what went on in the locker room or what it meant. Also, we know that prior to that scene Lulu had been very hard on Wakka, so the logical deduction is that said scene's purpose was to show that Lulu felt bad for how she treated him.
Then there's the Farplane scene. After Tidus brings up dating Wakka to Lulu, Lulu responds with surprise and disgust. That she would be surprised that anyone mentioned Wakka that way shows that Lulu never considered him romantically before. And again, nothing romantic takes place with Wakka and Lulu after that scene. It's almost as if that were meant to clarify things.
Note that Tidus never asks Wakka about Lulu. Nor does anyone else.
Lulu and Wakka are often seen standing and talking together, but that alone doesn't signify anything. The two of them never speak about anything romantic. They don't flirt, or consider taking their relationship beyond a friendship. None of the other characters push for them to get involved with each other, something they do constantly with Tidus and Yuna.
Then there are Wakka and Lulu's views of each other. Wakka sees Lulu like a big sister. He looks up to her and runs to her when he's scared or confused. He's also afraid of her. And Lulu sees Wakka as a little brother. When Wakka, Yuna, and the Aurochs race up the stairs to Kilika Temple, Lulu laughs at them and calls them kids. Wakka is not a character she considers to be on her level.
Pre-FFX, Lulu was engaged to Chappu. She knew both Wakka and Chappu while growing up in Besaid. If she had any romantic feelings for Wakka — and if Wakka had any feelings for her — then surely there would have been some competition between the brothers, and conflict in Lulu's heart. But FFX shows nothing like this whatsoever.
News of Wakka and Lulu's marriage and Lulu's pregnancy came early in the flood of news that preceded FFX-2's release. Those situations were created to keep both characters out of the main party. Early in the making of FFX-2's storyline, Lulu was dismissed as a character who would "bring down the enthusiasm" of Rikku and Yuna. As for Wakka, he certainly wouldn't fit in with the teenage fangirl theme, so something had to be done to keep him out of the picture, since he'd normally be eager to join Yuna's new quest. The result: Wakka and Lulu were married off and Lulu was made pregnant. (If the two were just married, they would still be able to keep up with their younger friends.) It's an application of the old adage "two birds with one stone."
There's no back story for the Lulu/Wakka marriage in FFX-2. We get a halfhearted explanation in Chapter 4, when Lulu mentions very subtly to Yuna that her attitude toward Wakka had changed. That may be enough for Square Enix, but it certainly isn't enough for intelligent fans, who are left rightfully scratching their heads.
In any story, sensibility should trump convenience. Anyone who has any doubts about the sensibility of Lulu x Wakka need only look to FFX for the answers.
